How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 starsAn enlightening account of the sacrifices soldiers make in service of their country

Owen Chandler's story of his journey from church pastor and Army reservist chaplain, through deployment to Iraq, and then transitioning back to civilian life with his family is amazing. His stories evoke many different emotions. The full time Army treatment of reservists was an issue I had never considered. Deployment impact on spousal relationships, children, jobs, and mental state were all covered from different perspectives, including very sensitive issues. He didn't avoid the hard stuff. Many very personal situations were discussed in detail. Once I started reading, I hated to put the book down.

Was a bad read, and couldn’t help but spread a false narrative of an “armed insurrection”. What a joke from a military individual and not even true.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful reflection on a old war
Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2021
Chaplain Chandler offers in this book a thoughtful reflection on the impact of a war that has continued since 2003. As a veteran in that war, I resonate with the experiences of Chaplain Chandler and recognize the cost that this ongoing war continues to have on the American Soldier. Excellent work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A profound and moving excursion !

Chandler mixes up an emotional stew of the realities of war. The stories invoked an uneasiness as the vulnerability and under belly of soldiers and their daily life at war were exposed. I was dragged kicking screaming out of my sacred comfort zone.

Providing a hope filled message about the committed persistence of an Army Chaplain, I ended the book feeling encouraged for our soldiers future. A recognition and acknowledgment of the monumental tasks ahead executed with compassion and love of fellow man.

This book helped me to understand the military experience in a way I never had before. It helped open the door to the hearts and thoughts of those who serve in the military. The day I started the book, I happened to sit next to a serviceman on a plane. Just reading those first few pages gave me the courage to speak to him, and I'm so glad I did. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a loved one in the service, or to anyone who wants to understand better the realities of military life.

Delves into relationships, his own and others while showing how war effects those who are asked to leave their families and friends and travel half way around the world to a hurry up and wait, war torn land full of tension, fear and complacency. His faith and love of mankind are evident throughout. Be prepared to bring your hanky or tissues when reading. SAC

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all people!
Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2021
As a member of his congregation at Saguaro Christian Church in Tucson, AZ, I know that Owen Chandler is a very diverse and compassionate chaplain. Reading his stories of his military service in Iraq is both heartwarming and troubling. You can tell that Rev. Chandler loves his God, the men and women he serves in the military and his family. I look forward to his next book. Frances J

I’ve read a lot of military focused books, and this is a great one to add to your collection. If you’re just joining the military, or have a family member joining and don’t know much about the military other than what you see in movies, this is the book for you. Things are explained in a way that you don’t have to have been to boot camp to “get it.”

I was drawn to Chandlers candor. No sugar coating, few euphemisms and palpable emotions offered up in a real and raw way. You do not guess where this Rev is coming from! And especially poignant is his outpouring of affection for his soldiers, love of family and devotion to church. This THIS is what it’s REALLY like!

This story provides rich insight in the sacrifices made by those who wear the uniform on behalf of their country and it shows the impact of a faithful servant who is obedient to a divine calling. Also, very encouraging and impressive, is the clarity of purpose and mission evident in the Saguaro Christian Church community (true example of Christian love and service).
