Children of the Promise, Volume 1: Rumors of War Kindle Edition
“Every era has its own refiner's fire, and World War II put general Church membership and Utah to a test,” Dean Hughes explains. In Children of the Promise, his first historical fiction series for adults, Dean shows through the eyes of the Thomas family how LDS families were tested to the limit.
“Most people agree it was a fascinating time in world and American history. In fact, there is a charm and nostalgia about that dramatic period,&rduqo; says the author. Dean weaves in those aspects among the conflict in the series. The first volume, Rumors of War opens in 1938 with Elder Alex Thomas and his companion serving in Germany. It soon becomes obvious that he will never complete his mission. War is coming, and that will affect not only Elder Thomas but also his family back home in Salt Lake City.
I couldn't put this book down. It really made me think of how it would have been at that time. With families struggling and working together to stay close and together, they really had to rely on each other. They, like the pioneers, realized how lucky and blessed they were. I can't wait to read the next in the series. Great series, very educational, September 26, 2008
I borrowed this whole set from my father-in-law and devoured it in a very short time. I learned so much about this era and developed a love for the characters as if they were real people. I cried many times while reading these and gained a much greater appreciation for "the Greatest Generation." Dean Hughes is an excellent writer!, November 04, 2008
These books are great! I have 13 of his books and enjoy every one. I especially enjoyed the Children of promise series. I would recommend these to anyone!

This is well-researched, "historical fiction," starting just before WWII, and this book goes through part of 1942. The story centers around the mythical Thomas family, and they end up being missionaries/paratroopers in Germany, the Bataan Death March, the Navy/Marines in the Pacific, building supplies in the home-front, etc. Some of the stories are borrowed from other Latter-day Saints's experiences.
Dean Hughes' son, Tom, does a great job as a reader. Having served as a missionary in Germany, he does a great job with that accent. Yet, he doesn't over-act, like some readers.
