Esther Titus
5.0 out of 5 starsFar from easy and progressive
Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2017
Dragon Ride shattered all my pre-conceived ideas of life in China. Far from easy and progressive, it is hard, frightening and, for an American missionary, lonely. After one particularly grim ordeal, the author became aware that this was her initiation into being accepted as Chinese, where one “always faced a brick wall, and was never given a solution for making life work”. A sense of humor was helpful, if not required. Food was unusual (stir-fried silkworms anyone?)
This is an amazing book. A 21st century missionary is making missions real for today. Read it aloud with your family – from your mid-elementary aged children to the oldest senior in your home, everyone will be drawn into the struggles, intrigue and suspense written here. You will share in the fears, disappointments, rejection and humiliation of Chinese Christians who are arrested and often jailed for their faith. Ministry was slow, cautious; demons were real; threats were daily; prayer was imperative.
The author’s own background as an atheist, and her own search for truth, became a starting point for conversations with university students during those years in China and Hong Kong. Grace Jacob doesn’t pretend to know all the answers. She shared her doubts, imperfections, anger, questions, and the heartache of having to leave China for the safety of her family, and the safety of the Chinese believers. In all the years spent living there, this truth stood out: God was faithful. He could be trusted. He always answered prayer.

3.0 out of 5 starsA Fascinating Peek into Chinese Culture!
Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2020
As someone with a passion for missions, I enjoyed this book. My favorite parts of Grace's story was hearing about what life is really like in China as well as reading of her evangelistic efforts and the various approaches she took when ministering to the lost. It was a fascinating peek into Chinese culture! I especially liked that she didn't have a one size fits all approach in her evangelism. There were a lot of interesting stories that kept the book from dragging. She struck me as a brave and authentic person who isn't afraid to ask the tough questions and when finding their hard answers, she isn't afraid to share them, albeit graciously. She and her husband have done an honorable work in a most difficult nation. I pray that God will raise up more like them.

Because the writing could be a bit better, I'd give it 3.5 stars.

A memorable quote from the author -

“Falling in love, where you only imagine what the person is like, now that’s wishful thinking. You think the person is just what you imagined him to be, but you’re not actually connecting with a real person. Really knowing someone is completely different—he won’t be just what you imagined, and there will be things you don’t like about him. Also, the relationship can grow deeper. My relationship with God is a real relationship. How do I know? He’s not exactly what I imagined he would be. He’s way beyond what I imagined. Also, I keep getting to know him more deeply. That doesn’t happen with an imagined relationship. In fact, although most things about God I really like, there are some things I don’t like about him and the Bible. If God came out of my imagination, I would like everything about him. So God is not just wishful thinking.”

This was the most unpredictable and riveting missionary book I have ever read. The author opens herself up in such a personal way that it makes you feel as if you are right there with her. Her story grabbed ahold of me and has not let go.
She gives a rare and honest view of China from the polluted cities to the majestic mountains. She tells of struggles and triumphs. You can feel the love she has for people and the love she has for Jesus.
I highly recommend this book.

It’s said that “you can’t judge a book by its cover”, but actually it was the cover on Dragon Ride that initially attracted me to the book. I was looking for a specific biography when Dragon Ride popped up on the screen along with the other book. I noticed that Dr. John Townsend wrote the foreword so I thought the book must be good, although I had never heard of Grace Jacob.

I was not disappointed and in fact the book both blessed and challenged me. I was grateful to read of a couple who didn’t let tremendous difficulties, challenges and major health problems stop them from lovingly, sharing Christ with those they came to know. I was inspired by the very natural way that Grace made the Gospel come alive to others.

This book captured my attention and heart.

Dragon Ride draws you in and holds you through tumultuous times coupled with glorious work for Jesus! It is broken down into small chapters/sections so don't feel trapped, you can put it down and then pick it up again with ease. The matter of fact manner that Grace demonstrates as she lives and teaches Jesus is born of her own struggle early on, and the Lord uses it to bring others to relationship with Him.

If you want to know how missionaries evangelize, this is the book to read.

Grace Jacob recounts 29 years of joys and struggles of sharing the Gospel in Hong Kong and mainland China. It was so enriching and encouraging to see how God is opening the hearts of Chinese people to the Gospel in the face of communism, Buddhism and Confucist ideas.

I'm reminded of Acts 5:39 in regard to the spread of Christianity in China... "if it is of God, you will not be able to stop [it], you will only find yourselves fighting against God."

5.0 out of 5 stars Faith and Faithfulness in foreign land

As a former missionary, I loved this autobiography of a missionary family in China. The challenges of faith, and the miracles the Lord worked in unlikely places with unlikely people for his glory reinvigorates my faith in a God who is there, and sees and acts for the sake of his name and unerringly guides his servants (even in life threatening situations). Through it all, God is the center of Grace's story; testing her faith and through it all reaping a joyous harvest of precious souls who are even now spreading the Gospel of freedom to others in China. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Contemporary Missionary Biography
Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2017

I grew up reading books like this, and they played a major role in my own sense of call to devote myself to the cross-cultural communication of the good news that Jesus Christ died for all mankind, and rose again to make it possible for all who believe in Him to have eternal life.. I've often wondered where the books were that would challenge and inspire the next generation of Christians to live their lives on mission for Christ, and especially to be willing to do so cross-culturally. This is one such book, and it goes beyond inspiring and challenging to giving insights into how to effectively engage people who are very different from oneself in dialog about the things that really matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars I truly felt like I myself went along for the ride
Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2017

Grace Jacob brought her stories to life in this book. I truly felt like I myself went along for the ride, experiencing the frustrations, anticipation, joy, and peace with every trial. She opened by explaining how she stepped out into the mission field of Hong Kong and then Mainland China realizing she had no effective strategy of sharing the Christian gospel to an apathetic people in a land inhospitable to it. Only by not relying on her own understanding and leaning on the Holy Spirit for guidance was she able to eventually touch many souls. Having the stories told in chronological order made it possible to trace Grace's own personal development and the progression of her ministry with time.

In the early years it seemed she presented the Christian gospel basically as a means for coping with life's hardships that was better than what the other prevailing religions and philosopies offered. This may have been because her gospel contacts often demanded to be convinced that Christianity, should they accept and believe it, would be of greater benefit to them.

I think a turning point in her evangelism occurred as she began to gain deep insights into their world views and how they were shaped, i.e. 1) the Daoist roots of Chinese culture which does not consider telling the truth important but rather avoids interpersonal conflict at all costs so snooth relationships can be maintained, 2) Confucianism and it's rules of social responsibility which place blood relationships at the core and foreign relations at the outer rim, and 3) Communism with its indoctrination that God and the Bible are mere myths.

Grace understood that the Chinese culture considers people as being naturally good. She also understood they do not submit to absolute truth, therefore, bringing up the subject of sin was a challenge for her. None of the young women in her first university discussion group thought they were sinful and why would they when they were raised to believe there are no absolutes. Nevertheless she forged on until there was a breakthrough and they realized what sin was and what it looked like in life. The women seemed to realize things can be changed, even they themselves could be changed, when you begin to call out things as sin rather than excusing all actions and rationalizing them as products of genetics, or the environment, or the culture. I found her approach really good and was so excited when one of the girls in the group amazingly came to the conclusion all on her own that Christianity is completely different from Buddhism because Christianity is a relationship! They were led to understand relationship with God is the biggest thing possible but without repentance and forgiveness that relationship is impossible. Only God's own plan of salvation makes it possible. Praise God for the power of the gospel to change lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Title Describes It Well ... Wild and Dangerous!

Grace’s tapestry of dramatic true stories from her family’s life in China are exciting and inspiring. Beginning the book with her own doubts of God’s existence and a reason to live, she discovers a solid faith of her own. Her love for the Chinese people led her and husband Justin into a roller-coaster life in a communist country, hostile to the Christian faith. Lots of intrigue, danger, high points and many times feelings of despair. Some chapters read like a spy novel — keeping a step ahead of the government’s prying eyes to avoid suspicions and being deported from the country. Not designed to be a “how-to” book on sharing your faith, yet her stories of thoughtful interactions with Chinese people inspire me to explore various ways to share my own faith.

I highly recommend this book. I almost read it all in one sitting, it was that interesting to read. Her journey from atheist to believer is amazing, and her experiences with the precious Chinese people an encouragement to those of us that want to see people get saved. Her stories about what her family went through as missionaries might be helpful to anyone considering going on mission.
Her writing style is relaxed and very personal. You will feel blessed to have read it, I certainly am.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We read this book as a book club and loved it. Grace does an excellent job walking through her journey as a missionary to China and their focus on truly building disciples, not just evangelizing the masses. Wonderful book and a wonderful life lived for God.
