A boy discovers the complexities of conflict in this fast-paced and thoughtful look at the Vietnam War from the acclaimed author of Soldier Boys and Missing in Action. Rick Ward wants to go to war. And he's not sure why. Maybe he's running from his dad and his crazy temper. Maybe he's running from his girl, who seems to think he's more of a joke than a man. Or maybe he's just running-to find himself. After basic training, Rick enlists with the Charlie Rangers, a special unit that ambushes the enemy in secret jungle raids. It is the most dangerous front line duty, and Rick's six-man team will experience everything from horrifying enemy encounters to mourning the death of a comrade. Rick will discover that no one-not protestors, politicians, or writers-has got a clue. And he will see that war is far bigger, scarier, and more complicated than anything he ever could have imagined.

This was a birthday gift for my teenage grand daughter, who had read a different book by the same author. It was requested by her, not my choice, so apparently the book, story, author is of interest to teenage girls who enjoy reading good stories. He seemed very pleased with the gift.

The story of a young man who tries to find out the answers to his future and ends only with more questions. Sad, joyful and even exciting. The farewell to arm of this generation.

this book is just plain good reading. Dean Hughes is a great author and I read many of his books.

My 12-year old son is a war history enthusiast and was struggling to find fiction he enjoyed reading. But this series has kept him turning the pages into the late hours of the night.

Although the book was presented as a book for adolescents, it was targeted more for early adult. It follows some of the more disturbing parts of the Vietnamese war through the eyes of a late teen who has little clue of what he wants out of life. He learns that war is indeed hell. I would recommend this as reading for any late teen considering joining the military.
