Editorial Reviews

"Sunrising is a charming period-piece, grounded in Bulawayo's early history. Told in an easy style, the novel follows its young heroine's journey through suburbia at a time when all was not as "civilized" as it would become. Susan Hubert has done a marvellous job in using historical events to inspire plot twists, while never allowing modern sensibilities to creep in and ruin the mood." -  Paul Hubbard, Bulawayo Historian and Historical Guide.

Sunrising - a superbly written narrative of a bygone era. When men were rewarded for their effort and women battled to bring civilization to a harsh new world. Together as a team they would lay the foundation for a new Africa, but this new land would extract a price." - Gavin Stephens, Zimbabwe.

Sunrising is Bronte in action. This novel of manners is set in the early days of British settlement in Africa. The vivid descriptions of the African bushveld establish the setting for numerous activities and events" - Lynette McPeake, Canada.

"A delightful story lovingly interwoven with the early history and times of Bulawayo. This is a story which illustrates the strengths and the struggles of the pioneers, who made early treks to a foreign country. Beautifully written, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to the sequel." Sally Ivison, Zambia.

"Perhaps the familiarity with Bulawayo area and its people, and perhaps my love for history and historical novels, I got well immersed in the novel from the beginning. The human element is very evident and is written with sincerity and warmth, with a wonderful feel for the relationships that exist between the characters. I would highly recommend this novel with its charming storyline and human drama." Martha Querl, Zimbabwe.

"An interesting read about the life in Bulawayo during the early years of colonisation. The story reveals the challenges to women during this period." Lindsay Forster, Zimbabwe.

Susan Hubert was born and has lived in Zimbabwe all her life.

She has an English and Psychology degree from the University of Kwazulu Natal in South Africa, with Mathematics as a minor.

She taught Mathematics for 16 years at high schools in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, before retiring so she could spend more time with her husband, who was working as a professor of Equine Surgery at Louisiana State University and then Colorado State University. It was during this time she started writing.

When she was back home in Zimbabwe she tutored Mathematics and looked after her husband’s herd of cattle.

She now lives full time with her husband on a farm just outside Bulawayo, where they are establishing a pecan plantation. She has one son, Jack Allard, who is a golfer.
