Christianity isn’t about following rules, it’s about a relationship. The rise in popularity of this phrase coincides with a growing disinterest and misunderstanding regarding the role of God’s life-giving, perfect law in the Christian life. Rather than the source of joy it was intended to be, the law is viewed as an angry god’s restrictions for a rebellious people.

In her new book, Jen Wilkin tackles the law of God, a.k.a. the Ten Commandments, and what the role of these "ten words" are in the life of a 21st century. I loved this look at the law of the Lord and how it can live in harmony with Jesus' call to "... love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) I especially appreciated how she took each of the commandments and broke them down to their beginnings. For example, no one (hopefully!) wakes up with the intent to do murder. It starts with anger over a perceived wrong, which becomes anger nursed, into anged indulged, into anger gratified. (p.92) In our anger, we question a person's character, their worth, which dissolves into contempt and lack of value for their very life. (Paraphrase, p.93).
This was just one small example, but I have left reading this book with many thoughts to wrestle with. Where am I careless with my speech and my consideration of another person. While I might think such thoughts as a little envy here, and little disrespect here, might not be a big deal, these are mental baby steps that are the younger (invisible) siblings to the law of God so graciously given. In this way, we can live our lives for His glory and the good of our neighbors around us.

In Ten Words to Live By, Jen Wilkin presents a fresh biblical look at the Ten Commandments, showing how they come to bear on our lives today as we seek to love God and others, to live in joyful freedom, and to long for that future day when God will be rightly worshiped for eternity. Learn to see the law of God as a feast for your famished soul, open to anyone who calls on the name of the Lord.
Thanks to @crosswaybooks for the Kindle version of this book. I purchased the hard copy personally so I could highlight all the things.
Sunday School brought them to life for me with flannel graph images of Moses carrying the tablets of stone down from the mountain. But I have to admit, reading this book brought fresh and meaningful insights which gave me a new appreciation for these words of old.
Ten Words to Live By, written by Jen Wilkin, was a treat for my heart and mind as she showed how these commands bear impact on our lives today. As believers, we can forget these commands still serve a purpose in our lives now.
“The Ten Words are encouraging words, meant to give us hope – hope that we will live rightly oriented to God and others, hope that we will grow in holiness. They are not given to discourage but to delight. They are no less than words of life.” (page 18)
We need to remember these ten words – these ten commands – given to show us how to live rightly with God and with others. They put us on the right path here on earth.
