About the Author

Brad Borkan and David Hirzel are co-authors of When Your Life Depends on It: Extreme Decision Making Lessons from the Antarctic. The book focuses on the real life-and-death decisions made by early Antarctic explorers like Shackleton, Scott, Amundsen and Mawson.

The book reveals amazing lessons in leadership, team work, and sheer grit and determination that can help all of us make better decisions in our lives today. This can be especially useful when confronting adversity, building effective teams, and trying to succeed against the odds --all important skills in today's world.

Brad Borkan has always been fascinated with how people and businesses can make better decisions. With a graduate degree in Decision Sciences, Brad is a London-based Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. He has presented at business and Antarctic conferences, appeared on US-based cable TV, and on numerous historical and business-focused podcasts. His expertise lies in the themes of leadership, teamwork, and winning against the odds.
David Hirzel is a maritime historian and author. His passion is early Antarctic exploration, expressed in his books such as the
Sailor on Ice series about Tom Crean, one of Shackleton's hardiest men. When not writing or sailing in San Francisco Bay, David pursues his career in residential architecture. David is a popular guest lecturer for Viking and other cruise lines.
Always the perfect gift

5.0 out of 5 stars An Emergency Manager's Perspective
By Marc C. Baker on May 26, 2022
Leaders make very important decisions every day and as Emergency Managers some of those decisions could be life or death decisions, but these decisions are made when we are rested, in our climate-controlled offices or EOCs, with full bellies, and with resources at our disposal. But how do make sound decisions under extreme stress like starvation, exhausted, or deadly cold? These are precisely the conditions that the early explorers of Antarctica were under when they had to make life and death decisions. As systems start to go down and resources get depleted (ie. your food plan fails) how do you respond as an Emergency Manager? Do you train for this type of scenario? I think this is the level our training(s) should take us to inducing this kind of stress to see how our teams respond, working long hours and taking away some regularly scheduled feeding is sure to identify some character gaps.

I enjoyed reading this book, the stories were thrilling, the lesson are applicable for leaders today, and the structure was well laid out. I think leaders everywhere can benefit from the lessons and critical decision-making lessons that Shackelton and the other early Antarctic explores learned through their expeditions.

I highly recommend this book for Emergency Managers and all leaders.
