Mark Sullivan is the acclaimed author of eighteen novels, including the #1 Kindle bestselling Beneath a Scarlet Sky, and the #1 New York Times bestselling Private series, which he writes with James Patterson. Mark has received numerous awards for his writing, including the WHSmith Fresh Talent Award, and his works have been named a New York Times Notable Book and a Los Angeles Times Book of the Year. He grew up in Medfield, Massachusetts, and graduated from Hamilton College with a BA in English before working as a volunteer in the Peace Corps in Niger, West Africa. Upon his return to the United States, he earned a graduate degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and began a career in investigative journalism. "Gran parte de esa amnesia se debió a los italianos que sobrevivieron. Como me contó un antiguo partisano: <<Seguíamos siendo jóvenes y queríamos olvidar. Queríamos dejar atrás las cosas tan terribles que habíamos sufrido. Nadie habla en Italia de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y, así, nadie recuerda>>".

"Una persona muy sabia me dijo una vez que al abrir nuestros corazones y mostrar nuestras cicatrices nos volvemos humanos, imperfectos y completos".

"Ser joven y estar enamorado. ¿No resulta sorprendente que algo así pueda ocurrir en medio de la guerra? Dice algo de las bondades intrínsecas de la vida, por mucha maldad que hayamos visto".

Mucho se ha escrito sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero poco se conoce del sufrimiento y la vida que tuvieron que llevar los italianos cuando los nazis los invadieron.

Esta es la maravillosa historia de Pino Lella, un adolescente de 17 años, de familia acomodada y trabajadora viviendo en Milán, con muchos sueños por cumplir, enamorado de todas las chicas hasta que conoce a Anna... pero entonces...empiezan a bombardear Milán, y ésta se vuelve una bellísima ciudad, pero insegura. Este acontecimiento, hará que lo alejen de la ciudad donde comenzará una de las grandes aventuras de su vida. También llegará a ser chofer personal del General Leyers, quien fuera la mano derecha de Hitler en Italia.

He leído mucho sobre la Segunda Guerra, y aún así no deja de sorprenderme, y lastimarme, las historias cruentas, las masacres sin piedad, las tremendas atrocidades perpetradas, las injusticias, el dolor provocado, las muertes, y al mismo tiempo me maravillo de la grandeza, fortaleza, inmensa solidaridad y empatía, la entrega absoluta, y el inmenso valor del ser humano, que arriesgando sus propias vidas lo dieron todo por ayudar en la medida que podían hacerlo, venciendo miedos, fobias, ascos y dolor.

La historia de Pino se mantuvo oculta por más de 50 años, pero definitivamente, era una historia que merecía escribirse para que el mundo la conociera. Porque Pino Lella fue un héroe que hizo todo por ayudar a los judíos. Fue, es y seguirá siendo algo sorprendente y maravilloso.

Y aunque esta novela tiene algo de ficción, por los vacíos que no se pudieron llenar durante la investigación debido a la quema generalizada de documentos nazis, y al olvido forzado y colectivo de los italianos acerca de este traumático acontecimiento, esta historia es un documento valioso, inteligente, sensible, crudo, verdadero y entrañable. ¡Qué ganas de conocer a Pino, abrazarlo, escucharlo y decirle tantas cosas especiales que se merece! Un chico de 17 años se fue de su casa en junio de 1943, y en dos escasos años, vivió todo lo vivible, aprendió todo lo que había que aprender, vio todo el dolor y el horror de los es capaz el ser humano, y amó con la entrega y la capacidad del hombre más experimentado.

El trabajo de investigación, de años, del escritor Mark Sullivan, es inmenso y excelso. Esta historia dio a conocer al mundo la vida del desconocido, hasta ese momento, Pino Lella. ¿Quién iba a decir que ambos se salvarían del oscuro panorama que es, por momentos, la vida?

¡Gran, gran y recomendable historia!
