We owe thanks to Margalit Fox for rescuing this story from history's dustbin. On one level, it's a WWI tale borne of determination, character, intelligence, and skill few of us possess. On another level, it's an expose of spiritualism: its rise in Victorian times and its flourishing during the technological wonders that emerged during the 19th century – with (to me) surprising ties between them. And on yet another level, it's a timeless lesson in how the con artist deceives a mark, even providing a little history on the evolution of the con. And on still another level, it's especially relevant today, as fraudsters figure out new ways to prey on the unfortunate in our age of instantaneous mass communication and social media.
