Had Jim minded his own business, left the tribe alone to live their own life as they saw fit, instead of attempting to pry them away from their beliefs with the crowbar of his faith, he might have lived long enough to embrace the teachings of Napoleon Hill and live a life of true success. A wasted life. His wife manipulated the story of his missionary failures in order to portray him as a martyr. She saw an opportunity when Jim died: cash in. Maybe Jim got his foolish self killed, but why not recast the story in a way that Christians would appreciate? And on a scale so large that she could secure her and her late husband’s place in the annals of Christian history? Why not? And so it was that Jim’s wife cashed in, turning yet another Christian missionary disaster into sonethung halfway respectable: a cash cow.
