5.0 out of 5 starsFar from easy and progressive
Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2017
Dragon Ride shattered all my pre-conceived ideas of life in China. Far from easy and progressive, it is hard, frightening and, for an American missionary, lonely. After one particularly grim ordeal, the author became aware that this was her initiation into being accepted as Chinese, where one “always faced a brick wall, and was never given a solution for making life work”. A sense of humor was helpful, if not required. Food was unusual (stir-fried silkworms anyone?)
This is an amazing book. A 21st century missionary is making missions real for today. Read it aloud with your family – from your mid-elementary aged children to the oldest senior in your home, everyone will be drawn into the struggles, intrigue and suspense written here. You will share in the fears, disappointments, rejection and humiliation of Chinese Christians who are arrested and often jailed for their faith. Ministry was slow, cautious; demons were real; threats were daily; prayer was imperative.
The author’s own background as an atheist, and her own search for truth, became a starting point for conversations with university students during those years in China and Hong Kong. Grace Jacob doesn’t pretend to know all the answers. She shared her doubts, imperfections, anger, questions, and the heartache of having to leave China for the safety of her family, and the safety of the Chinese believers. In all the years spent living there, this truth stood out: God was faithful. He could be trusted. He always answered prayer.

3.0 out of 5 starsA Fascinating Peek into Chinese Culture!
Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2020
As someone with a passion for missions, I enjoyed this book. My favorite parts of Grace's story was hearing about what life is really like in China as well as reading of her evangelistic efforts and the various approaches she took when ministering to the lost. It was a fascinating peek into Chinese culture! I especially liked that she didn't have a one size fits all approach in her evangelism. There were a lot of interesting stories that kept the book from dragging. She struck me as a brave and authentic person who isn't afraid to ask the tough questions and when finding their hard answers, she isn't afraid to share them, albeit graciously. She and her husband have done an honorable work in a most difficult nation. I pray that God will raise up more like them.

Because the writing could be a bit better, I'd give it 3.5 stars.

A memorable quote from the author -

“Falling in love, where you only imagine what the person is like, now that’s wishful thinking. You think the person is just what you imagined him to be, but you’re not actually connecting with a real person. Really knowing someone is completely different—he won’t be just what you imagined, and there will be things you don’t like about him. Also, the relationship can grow deeper. My relationship with God is a real relationship. How do I know? He’s not exactly what I imagined he would be. He’s way beyond what I imagined. Also, I keep getting to know him more deeply. That doesn’t happen with an imagined relationship. In fact, although most things about God I really like, there are some things I don’t like about him and the Bible. If God came out of my imagination, I would like everything about him. So God is not just wishful thinking.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and insightful

I got this book figuring it would be an adventure story of how discreet missionaries are doing God's work in China. However, once I got into it a few sections, I realized it was that and more. The book's insights are proving immediately applicable to my life, with valuable ideas about living and sharing faith in any diverse culture, including here in the US where I live.
It was fascinating to read her ways of sharing the Good News with secular atheists, Buddhists, Muslims and others, by learning "to think like they think in order to make the gospel appealing." As Grace wrote: "I couldn’t start from my way of thinking and expect them to make the transition—almost definitely they wouldn’t. I had to make the switch and think like they did."
The book is filled with engaging personal testimony, accounts of God's miraculous works, and lessons learned in many different ministry settings. Grace writes in a sincere, naturally interesting way that drew me into the book and kept me eager to read what would come next. I particularly appreciated the splendid imagery, to let me visualize the country & people.
I thought the author's use of her 48 vignettes was masterful. If ever I were to take on writing to share some of my own life stories & lessons-learned with my kids & grandkids, this is the way I'd try to do it!
Oh yes: you'll have to read the book to learn why "Lazy waitresses are ideal for secret Christian training. "

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, Valuable Book about Decades of Intimate Life Experiences of an American Family in Modern China
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2017

Dragon Ride is an excellent contribution to the understanding of contemporary Chinese culture and politics, as well as a segment of Evangelical Christianity in the USA. It is largely a series of autobiographical episodes in the life of the author and her family in the context of intense interaction for nearly thirty years with Chinese people of Hong Kong and mainland China. The author and her husband hail from two separate locations on the American East Coast but share a common call to introduce their Christian faith to Chinese people. They have learned to speak fluently two largely different Chinese dialects, and have engaged the diverse peoples in Hong Kong, in large urban mainland Chinese centers and in the relative rural Chinese backwaters, including people from some non-Han minority groups. They have grown to love and appreciate the various peoples and their cultures and to develop ways of communication which are respectful of those peoples’ sensitivities. The author comes across as an intense, sincere, energetic, devout, and refreshingly transparent Christian woman. The book’s episodes highlight her attempts, successful and unsuccessful, to evangelize her non-Christian Chinese acquaintances, consistent with Jesus Christ's Great Commission found in the Bible in Matthew 28:18-20. The direct writing style is clearly the voice of the author. The book is easy to read and is conveniently divided into relatively short episodic chapters. It heavily uses the jargon of evangelical protestant Christians and therefore it will be quite familiar and comfortable to them. It may be misunderstood and even be off-putting to those not from those communities. Nevertheless this book will be of value to both Christians and non-Christians. Christians will find the stories inspirational and encouraging. To Christians and non-Christians alike it will provide valuable insights into modern Chinese culture, which has immense worldwide importance. At this time of national polarization and misunderstanding, for non-Christians or casual Christians it will give insights into some of the values and mindsets of a large number of their neighbors and fellow citizens, and this perhaps may be useful for personal bridge building.

5.0 out of 5 stars Missionary life

The Lord brought this book accross my path as I had been searching for a book about missionary life in China. The hardships and trials there as well as more about the culture and Chinese people. Seeing Gods provision and blessings in the lives of missionaries always encourages me in the Lords goodness and power. I have enjoyed this book. Jesus was able to use it to give me wisdom in sharing the gospel with others based on the things Grace learned as she went. It’s been a blessing to me to read with along with the Holy Spirit and hear the heart of Father God for Grace and her family and the Chinese people. And also to hear Grace and her families heart for those around her. Reflecting His love through them. Grace was also authentic with the shortcomings and difficulties in her own life and what was hard for her.... overall if you are looking to understand Chinese culture and people more and missionary life this book is very insightful. Especially for those with a heart for Chinese people. Thank you Grace for what you have written and for sharing the snippets of what the Lord has done for you and for those around you through you. Blessings in Christ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest, engaging, insightful look into China through the eyes of an approachable, feet of clay missionary.

A page turner for me. I'm a bit leery of missionary accounts; one can too easily objectify unbelieving persons - objects to be converted rather than fellow humans to be loved while encouraged to meet their Savior. Grace's deep love, sensitivity, and respect towards others encouraged me. Her many stories of those she met and enjoyed brought insight into the lives of today's varied Chinese people I've never seen before. Her vulnerability, sharing her fears and failures as well as times of faith, brought me reassurance that perfection isn't necessary!

As another reviewer noted, woven into her accounts is training in respectful listening, engaging in spiritual conversation, and helping others to consider for themselves what they believe. Any of us who wish to respect and enjoy others outside the faith while helping them consider the beauty of walking with God can learn much from Grace.

I've known Grace and her husband for many years, and completely trust their accounts of life in China. Some of that confidence stems from my own experiences in China over the last 13 years. If you're interested in the reality of living in this atheistic communist country (unfoundedly fearful of Christianity), rather than politically influenced western romantic speculation, then you need to read "Dragon Ride".
Along with the challenging perspectives we're offered through Grace's accounts, we are blessed with her delightfully animated personality, and gifted communication style!
Being a typically slow reader myself, I've often taken months to read a single book. Yet I have "sped" through this captivating book in just over one week! (I'm pitiful, right?)
Enjoy the "Ride"!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Read!!

A Canadian fisherman who was a legend in his own time was once asked, by me, what was his secret to his fishing prowess. He replied, “You have to learn to think like a fish.” This is what this author has done. When she is attempting as Jesus said, to become “fishers of men”, to try to win these beloved people to Jesus Christ, she has learned to think like a Chinese Communist, atheist, Muslim, animist, or Buddhist, and has, like this fisherman mentioned, become very successful at it.
This book gives many ideas on how to lovingly win the various people groups, nudging them to carefully think through their own individual Weltanschauung. Most people have never done that, but simply accept what their family or schooling has taught them, without carefully evaluating its truth content.
This is an amazing, raw book, rather unique in “telling you like it really is”. Whether you want to learn to think through your own pre-suppositions, or want to learn how to win for Jesus Christ those you have thought unreachable, this book is an absolute must-read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perseverance In Evangelism Despite Trials
Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2021

Dragon Ride is truly inspiring. The author and her family's perseverance in China, staying the course of evangelism through political dangers and cultural obstacles is truly inspiring! They suffered through numerous trials to share God's love and mercy where mercy is unknown. Having lived on several mission fields and understanding the adjustments made to live in foreign cultures, learning a foreign language and meeting all licensing and reporting requirements to local governments I never saw or experienced the strictness one would find in China.
As I read this book almost every page shared hardships encountered and how the Lord supported them through them. Some were so crippling to ministry that if not for their faith in God's calling to China it would have been hard to stay. I was so impressed with their steadfastness over the years that I likened their resolve and commitment to their work and ministry as the Apostle Paul was to his.

I just finished reading Dragon Ride and was so immensely moved and encouraged by this testimony of God’s faithfulness to the author, her family, and her friends. The author's explanation of the questions she asked her friends to guide them to truth as well as the things that helped confirm and restore her faith have already been so useful to me and I can’t wait to share them with others!

This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to be edified by the stories of other believers, for anyone interested in learning more tools to share the good news, and for anyone even outside Christianity who may be curious about what God is like.

Grace’s account on her missionary work in China for 29 years is extraordinarily filled with awe and wonders! The stories in her book are so captivating that the book is a great source for those who like to peek into the clashes of Christianity and other cultural values, political systems and ideologies. It can also serve as a guidepost for those who are interested in learning about the foreign mission fields.

Grace details the struggles she and her family have to face while sharing the gospel in China. The struggles are so up close and personal that I felt like being with her at every scene while reading the book. She on one hand have to the overcome the systematic restriction imposed by a communists' government on evangelism, and on the other hand she had to break through the barriers stemmed from cultural, traditional and religious beliefs.

She holds an excellent observation on many very subtle behaviors of Chinese that as a Chinese I am so amazed at her insights. Some people let her pray for them and politely accepted the faith in front of her. But through experience accumulated from living in China for years, she knew many were reluctant to refuse her offers, to hurt her feeling and to lose their face! Not every time she has the rightful wisdom to help her share the gospel but sometimes whimsical ideas that only heaven knows just came out of her mouth! For example, when discussing value of humility, her Buddhist friend Doris said only when a person becomes humble is he honored by others. But Grace would counter “When a person becomes truly humble, he no longer cares if people give him a lot of honor.” This dialogue highlight the sharp contrast of Buddhist karma and humility in Christ.

I also like the discussions on comparing Christianity with Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. They offer readers who take Christianity for granted different perspectives on their faith and Grace’s positions on these discussions substantially clarify the true meaning of gospel and faith.

All in all this is a great book of adventures in the mission fields. The awesome wonders of God’s invisible hand can be seen throughout the book. Highly recommended.
