5.0 out of 5 starsAn Encouraging & Challenging Word from God Himself
Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2019
I've known this story for decades, but never read it - the power is in the details, especially the personal attitudes, struggles and responses. The humble faith and reliance on Jesus Christ and GOD'S Word and His Sovereignty speaks deep into my soul. This was the first book I picked to read in bed, last thing I do each day, in a quest to turn my mental habit of worry to faith and trust in the Lord. Thank you, Lord, to leading me to Elizabeth Elliot's "Through the Gates of Splendor."

3.0 out of 5 starsNot new as advertised and not same cover. Old edition
Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021
I received this title but not this cover. If it is a new book it was one a long time ago. There are no markings in it but the spine is not tight and the page edges are a bit dirty. It probably sat on a shelf for a long time. This should not have been advertised as new.
It was well packaged and came quickly but isn't as advertised.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very inspirational telling of risk-taking and sacrifice

I ordered this book after watching the movie End of the Spear that tells about five missionaries who were slain by natives in Ecuador. The story is extremely moving as you learn about the depth of faith and dedication these men had for spreading the Gospel, even in spite of the known risks, as well as how their families dealt with the events and continued, quite successfully, to carry own their husbands' and father's work. Through Gates of Splendor gave the backstory to the End of the Spear movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impactful

I recently purchased this as a gift for someone. I can say, without any hesitation, that this is probably one of the most impactful books that I've ever read. That was probably fifty-three years ago and it still has an impact when I read passages. This is the true story of a group of men who felt God call them to reach a group of reclusive, warrior natives in South America. The most famous of those men are Nate Saint and Jim Elliot. Jim's wife, Elizabeth, wrote this book detailing their call, dedication, diligence, enthusiasm, devotion and massacre at the hands of the people that they chose to reach out to. Tragic, inspirational, motivational are works that immediately come to mind. This is not the easiest of books to read as you approach the inevitable climax - but I recommend it to anyone who has the nerve to open the cover.

I first read this book as a teenager many years ago. I read it again with the eyes of a 50 something person, and learnt so many new things from this book. It is a book of challenge and wonder, grace and forgiveness! It is a book that takes the command to spread the gospel to the uttermost part of the earth in all the seriousness and love with which Christ said it. One cannot read this book without reflecting on one's own life as a child of God. One cannot read this book without marveling at the power of the Gospel to change lives, to bring about forgiveness and reconciliation in the circumstances where vengeance and retribution would be justifiable.

VINE VOICE
5.0 out of 5 stars Brimming with Enthusiasm, Inspirational and Poignant
Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2003

Elisabeth Elliot masterfully journals the account of the 5 young missionaries enthusiastic outreach for Indian tribes in Ecuador, starting with their calling and arrival in Ecuador, working with the Quichas and some more accessible tribes and drawn to the bringing of the Gospel to the Auca, a tribe feared by all of their neighbors as lurking killers whose custom is to spy and ambush all outsiders. The men, with hearts burdened for the Auca, sought to befriend them and give them the Gospel. The account leaves no doubt that these men and their wives were led by the Lord and even though the outcome was not what was hoped for, Mrs. Elliott's book is inspirational in the enthusiasm that these dedicated servants of the Lord went about to reach the Auca, as well as the widows' total reliance on their relationship with Jesus Christ after the men were killed to continue in their ministries to serve and bring the Gospel to the Ecuadorian Indians.
Highly recommended for home-schoolers, teenagers and today's youth in need of heroes.

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book to all ages
Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2016

The dramatic account by Ms. Elliot continues to grip the imagination today as it did when the massacre occurred. What she can only allude to in the two Epilogues was the ongoing ministry in the years immediately following the deaths of the five missionaries. Years later, long after her own passing, a ministry is still, in 2016, going on through the work of Steve Saint's family and many others. Also, Mission Aviation Fellowship is a far more active and vital ministry now than it was at that time, carrying out untold numbers of humanitarian missions throughout the remote areas of the world. I highly recommend this book to all ages, if only for the great story of courage and commitment it portrays; but, more so, for the powerful Godly faith and the love for a small group of forgotten people that continues to inspire.
The photo is of a necklace made by an Auca 25 years ago, and given to my wife by Steve Saint. Notice the intricate weaving of roots which had been chewed until pliable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spirit Sorrow

This account of the martyrdom of Jim Elliot and the other four missionaries (and I don't mean to minimize them by not mentioning their names) brings back today the way I felt when I read this book the first time so soon after the martyrdom took place. Deep sadness and pain in my heart, as well as groaning of the Spirit within me. Reading it today brings all that back again. There is a photo of one of the recovery party that says it all. You will know when you see it.

With this version comes a second epilogue, Elisabeth Elliot added years after she wrote this story. This chapter alone makes this version worth the read! So thankful for this godly woman's wisdom and her love for the Lord.

I am only fifteen years old and this was one of my summer reading books, and honestly I was dreading reading it. I will admit that in my opinion it starts out slowly, but then it gets really really good! It is just a little tough for me, so I would say that it would be just right for a high school senior or older. I really made me question my faith (in a good way) and it is so beautifully written that it made me cry when I finished it. I would recommend this to anyone!!
