Just Couldn't Get Into It
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 5, 2022
I read a lot, especially indie authors. Always curious to see what's out there available. I think I got this on sale as I did not download a sample. Not sure I would have bought it if I had--not at full price, anyway.
It's in the story itself that the main character wasn't really someone who should win. And in the end, she didn't even really 'win'. The story took a long time getting there. I would have more enjoyed one of the stronger earlier characters surviving to the end and putting their friendship to the ultimate test. I think that sort of conflict would have been worth reading to. And having that strong first character navigating the conflicts between the characters that come later would have been quite invigorating.
So, in the end I thought while this story rolled to a consistent end eventually and had some interesting ideas, it missed too many opportunities to really suck the reader in. And I'm not a fan of arena-type games that depend heavily on the machine interpreting a player's thoughts for the interaction. I never bought into the holodeck concept in a popular franchise, and didn't get into it here. If there's to be games to the death, physical prowess and intellectual depth are the much-better instruments of combat.
I do not plan on reading the next book in the series.
