5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
By Brenda M. on August 25, 2022
Why did I wait so long to read Yo No Soy Tu Perfecta Hija Mexicana? This novel is simply wonderful! I absolutely fell in love with Julia Reyes who is clearly a representation for the Mexican & Latinx community. Julia & the other characters are a true representations of the Latinx community making the story even more personal, as their portrayal could easily be someone in my family or in my circle.
The situations that arise are ones that we may have found ourselves in within our own family. Julia is faced with the task of not only trying to assimilate to a new life after losing her sister but also trying to face her own life decisions. She is both mature and quite frankly, sarcastic in the funniest of ways (something that I can resonate with Lol). Through Julia, we realize the struggles most first generation born children of immigrants face. The comparison to siblings or other family members, the need to be independent when it is not the norm in the culture (for the females), the fights encountered with what is right and wrong and how we learn not only from our own mistakes but also from the mistakes and secrets of our family members. Finally, the biggest one for me, the relationship with your parents.
How do we turn generational curses into lessons? Do we continue with what our culture dictates or do we start building our own culture/narrative? When do we get to become our own person and not be afraid to be selfish and reach our own goals and needs?
This novel does a beautiful job of bringing in all sorts of emotions and it allows us to delve deeper into the good and bad that we at times confront. There were many chapters that hit home for me, yet I think the ones with her parents were the most difficult. I deeply resonated with a lot of the issues that Julia found herself having with her mom. However, as an adult, I now see things differently and have appreciated what I have learned from my own relationship with my mom. Yet, I can clearly remember being Julia’s age and sharing the same frustrations. In the end, although we go through our own battles with family, the important lesson is that family is who is helps us become our own person. ❤️
